Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore guard Kelly Moten had 19 points and five assists to help 2nd-ranked Emporia State beat Nebraska Kearney, 80-49, Sunday afternoon in Kansas.
The Hornets (17-2, 10-2) rebound from a rare home loss while the Lopers fall to 11-10 (5-7).
UNK hung with E-State for the first 11 minutes, using a 7-0 run to trail 23-19. The spurt included a three from freshman reserve
Taylor Neilson (Meeker, Colo.) and buckets from senior
Amarah Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior
Laramey Lewis (Trenton).
However, Emporia's stingy defense picked up, limiting the Lopers to 30 points over the next 30 minutes. UNK finished 17 of 55 from the field (30.9%) and committed a season-high 27 turnovers.
Emporia, going just 11 of 21 at the line, made nearly half its shots (31 of 63) and had four players score in double figures.
In 23 minutes, Moten reached her total by making 8 of 12 shots (3 of 5 threes). Next, backcourt mate Addie Lackey was 6 of 9 from the field to tally 15 with freshman reserve guard Jacee Kramer hitting five free throws to score 10.
For the Lopers, South Dakota sophomore
Kelsey Fitzgerald had 14 points and seven rebounds with Lewis hitting two threes to reach 100 made in her career. She is just the seventh UNK woman to reach triple figures in made threes.
UNK is at 6th-ranked Fort Hays State (20-1, 12-0) Thursday night. The Tigers beat Emporia, 65-55, on Wednesday.
