On "Super Bowl Sunday", both Hornet teams downed the Lopers, the women winning 80-49 and the men posting an 74-72 victory.
Currently ranked 13th in the country, E-State (19-4, 12-4) stopped a rare two-game losing streak by beating Central Oklahoma, 80-67, last Saturday at home. Emporia leads the MIAA in field goal percentage defense (32.7%), 3-point percentage defense (27.2%), blocks (9.5) and offensive rebounds (15.).
Five-eight sophomore guard Kelly Moten (14.4), 6-3 senior Merissa Quick (11.0) and 5-9 true freshman Addie Lackey (10.4) lead in scoring with 6-2 senior Amber Vandiver (7.0) first in rebounds. She and Quick have combined to block 126 shots.
On February 1st, the Hornets scored 27 points off of 27 Loper turnovers and held UNK to 30.9% shooting to win. Moten led the way with 19 points and five assists in 23 minutes.
UNK (11-13, 5-10), currently 11in the MIAA standings, continues to be one of the nation's top three point shooting teams. Behind junior
Laramey Lewis (49 makes) and freshman
McKenzie Brown (46), the Lopers rank 15th in Division II in triple percentage (37.4%) while also leading the MIAA in threes made per game (6.6).
Ethan Brozek has 949 career pointsLewis and Brown should crack the UNK season top 10 for threes made very soon; Angie Osborn is 10th with 56 makes during the 1993-94 season.
In the men's game, UNK (14-8, 9-6) will certainly be leery of junior lefty guard Terrence Moore.
He's had two 27 point games against the Lopers, including on January 30th when he scored nine of the Hornets last 13 points.Moore averages 16.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 48% from the field and 77% at the line.
Sophomore Jevon Taylor, at 6-4 and 180 lbs., is the Hornets second leading scorer at 9.9 per game. He leads the team in treys with 50.
Since beating UNK and Washburn in back-to-back home games to start February, Emporia (11-14, 4-12) has lost three straight road games.
The Lopers, currently tied for fifth in the league standings with the top four teams receiving a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament, hope to get rolling down the stretch after losing three of four.
UNK is 10-2 at home with the setbacks coming to current No. 14 Colorado School of Mines, 91-83, and to Missouri Western State in OT, 81-77.
Kearney averages a healthy 83.1 points per game in the Health & Sports Center, thanks to 52% field goal shooting. Juniors Conner Beranek (21.3 points & 8.3 rebounds) and
Ethan Brozek (19.1 points & 9.6 rebounds) both are close to averaging a double double at home.
