Kearney, Neb. – For the second time in 10 days the Nebraska Kearney and Washburn basketball teams will meet on the hardwood.
The Ichabods visit the Health & Sports Center Saturday night at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Check the schedule pages (
women,
men) for media links. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as the women's contest serves as the annual "Think Pink" event.
On January 29th in Topeka, the Loper women (11-11, 5-8) led Washburn (14-7, 6-7) for the first 30 minutes but eventually fell in overtime, 68-61. UNK junior guard
Laramey Lewis (Trenton) gave fans free basketball when she hit a three pointer with six seconds left in regulation to force OT.
Washburn's leading scorers on the season, senior guards Casyn Buchman and Taylor Ignoto (both at 13.5 points per game), were held to a 7 of 25 effort from the field but the 'Bods bench provided 28 points to make up the difference.
Kearney got double doubles from senior post
Amarah Williams (25 points & 11 rebounds) and sophomore point guard
Alexa Hogberg (13 points & 10 rebounds) with WU managing 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 11 more shot attempts.
The Lopers are coming off back-to-back road losses to nationally-ranked Emporia State, 80-49, and Fort Hays State, 69-52. Washburn also lost to each of those clubs by scores of 62-58 (FHSU) and 62-55 (at ESU).
On the men's side in Lee Arena, the two teams managed 19 ties and 16 lead changes before UNK made some plays down the stretch to win 87-86 in OT.
Ichabod senior guard Kyle Wiggins scored 28, including a long three to end the night. Prior to his shot, Loper freshman
Ty Danielson (York) made two free throws to give Kearney a four-point lead.
In a rare occurrence, all five Kearney starters scored in double figures, led by junior post
Ethan Brozek (Norfolk Catholic H.S.) with 23.
Wiggins (14.0) and senior wing Alex North (11.8) pace the 'Bods, who are now 11-13 (6-7) after a last second loss at rival Emporia, 62-59, on Wednesday night. The Lopers have dropped two in a row but are 9-2 at home this winter, out scoring the competition by over 11 points in those contests.
Next week, Kearney has just one contest, a Thursday night road tilt at Pittsburg State.
