Cassie Roessing threw a complete game seven-hitter to help Nebraska Kearney win the first game of a double header over Missouri Southern State, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at Dryden Park.
UNK stranded 13 runners in the nightcap to fall by an 8-5 score.
Roessing (Phoenix, Ariz.) is now 2-2 after fanning six and walking just one Lion. Allowing one earned run, she shut out MSSU (2-14, 1-3) in five innings.
Offensively, the Lopers busted things open with a five run fourth that featured four hits. The big blows were two-run doubles from junior CF
Paige Hamelin (Payson, Ariz.) and sophomore DP
Amanda Dunn (Lincoln SW H.S.).
Also, junior 1b
Kate Ruwe (Blair) finished 3 for 3 with a run score from the cleanup spot.
UNK (2-15, 2-6) was poised for the sweep as they out hit the Lions, 11-10, in the second game. However, the Lopers stranded two or more runners in five different innings.
Already up 2-1, Southern scored two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to make it 7-2. The top two hitters in the lineup, Alana Hester and Abi Corbett, were a combined 4 for 6 with five RBI's and a run scored.
The Lopers committed two errors in the loss, leading to four unearned runs. Offensively, Roessing went 2 for 4 with an RBI as did sophomore 2b
