Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior designated hitter
Dillon Schroeder had five doubles to knock in 12 runs and help Nebraska-Kearney sweep a double header from Pittsburg State, 19-9 and 9-6, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
UNK improves to 16-10 (10-5) while the Gorillas fall to 6-14 (3-18).
The Lopers didn't trail all day as they led the first game 8-0 after two innings and held a 5-0 cushion after two innings of the second game.
Schroeder (Kearney Catholic H.S.) was part of an offense that finished with 24 hits and drew 19 walks. In game one, he had three base clearing doubles to go 3 for 4 with four runs and nine RBI's.
It was more of the same in the nightcap as Schroeder had two more doubles to go 2 for 4 with three RBI's. For the season, he is now batting a team-high .386 with eight doubles, three HR's and 25 RBI's.
On the mound in game one, true freshman
Mitchell Robinson (Golden, Colo.) improved to 3-0 by allowing six earned in 5.1 innings. He shut out Pitt over the first two innings and worked around 12 hits, nine being singles.
Besides Schroeder's heroics, junior 1b
Connor Messinger (Niwot, Colo.) went 4 for 5 with four RBI's and sophomore RF
Brent Kirsch (Papillion) went 2 for 3 with two RBI's and his third homer of the year.
Senior lefty
Aaron Smith (Cheyenne, Wo.) is also unbeaten this year as he made an emergency start in game two and allowed three earned on seven hits and two walks. Now 4-0, this was his first start in 30 career appearances as a Loper.
Seniors
Max Ayoub (Grand Island H.S.) and
Danny Droll (Penrose, Colo.) each drove in a pair of runs with leadoff hitter Shaney Sharkey (McKinney, Texas) going 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI.
