Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior catcher
Max Ayoub belted a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a five-run rally and help Nebraska Kearney sweep a double header from Fort Hays State, 13-6 and 16-15, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The nightcap featured 31 runs, 29 hits, six errors, four walks and four hit batters. UNK (10-8, 5-2) tallied four in its half of the first but the Tigers (3-6, 3-4) scored seven in the top of the fourth to grab a 9-5 lead.
Kearney came back to tie things at 10 after tallying five, on five hits and four errors, in the fifth. But, the Tigers hit home runs in the sixth and seventh innings to build a 15-11 lead.
Hays reliever/third baseman Austin Unrein, who went 3 for 5 at the plate with five RBI's, only recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh as UNK had six singles and drew one walk.
After senior 3b
Danny Droll (2 for 4, two runs) tied the game with a two-run single to left, junior LF
Anthony Pacheco (2 for 3, three runs & two RBI's) laid down a sac but. Earlier in the inning, senior CF
Brandon Landanger tried to sacrifice himself but got a bunt single instead.
UNK's five hole hitter, Ayoub (3 for 4, 2 two runs & three RBI's) belted an 1-1 pitch to deep center that normally would've been a double. It brought home Landanger (Kearney H.S.) and Ayoub was mobbed by his teammates in the infield.
Senior lefty
Aaron Smith (Cheyenne, Wyo.) struck out six and walked one in 3.2 innings to earn the win. UNK finished with 17 hits, including three doubles and homers by Pacheco and senior DH
Dillon Schroeder (2 for 3, five RBI's).
Finally for the Lopers, senior 2b
Coby Roming (Canyon, Texas) went 3 for 3 from the nine hole.
In game one, freshman
Mitchell Robinson (Golden, Colo.) earned his first collegiate win as he allowed four earned in six full innings. He struck out two and walked one and worked around two three-run innings by Hays.
UNK staked Robinson to a 7-0 lead as they ran Hays starter Steven Federau after a third of an inning. The Loper first featured six hits and one error; the Tigers ended with six miscues in the field, leading to seven unearned runs.
Sophomore RF
Brent Kirsch (Papillion-LaVista South H.S.) paced a 13-hit attacked as he two, two-run doubles to go 2 for 3 with five RBI's while junior SS
Shane Sharkey (McKinney, Texas) was 3 for 5 with two RBI's from the leadoff spot.
The series ends tomorrow with a single game beginning at noon.
