Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods used a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the second game of a doubleheader with Nebraska-Kearney, 7-6, Thursday night in Topeka, Kan.
WU (29-17) got a complete game six-hitter from Maustin Otterstatter to win game one, 6-3. UNK (26-20) and the 'Bods both have identical 21-13 league records to be tied for fourth place in the MIAA standings.
In the night cap, UNK scored five runs in the second inning to get out to a big lead. Three of the Lopers six hits came in this frame but Washburn also committed three errors and issued three walks.
The Ichabods responded with a five-spot of their own in the fifth, getting two-run singles from center fielder Parker Gibson (3 for 5) and catcher David Gauntt (2 for 4). Washburn then scored an unearned run in the sixth to grab its first lead.
With two outs in the Loper seventh, redshirt freshman shortstop
Josh Estrada belted a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to tie things up. The Texan finished 2 for 4 with two runs and that huge RBI.
Neither team threatened to score until the Washburn ninth when third baseman Kyle Carnahan (3 for 4) singled and took second on a sac bunt by Gauntt. Left fielder Connor Crimmins (2 for 5) ended the long night with a double to center.
Besides Estrada, senior third baseman
Danny Droll (Penrose, Colo.) went 2 for 3 with a run and RBI while senior
Ross Mortensen (Colo. Springs, Colo.) continued his recent hot streak on the mound, fanning five over two scoreless innings (one unearned run allowed).
Finally, senior center fielder
Brandon Landanger (Kearney H.S.), with a triple down the right field line in the sixth, became the 11th Loper to reach 200 career hits.
In game one, Otterstatter improved to 4-2 by shutting out UNK over the final three innings. Throwing 92 pitches, he fanned one and worked around four walks.
Washburn scored runs in four of the first five innings with Carnahan going 3 for 3 with two RBI's and nine hole hitter Payton Soicher finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI. The 'Bods racked up 10 hits, then had 17 in the nightcap.
Droll (2 for 4) had another multi-hit effort with redshirt freshman center fielder
Shane Stock (Millard South H.S.) 1 for 3 with an RBI. Finally, sophomore right fielder
Brent Kirsch (Papillion-LaVista South H.S.) has now hit safely in 20 straight games as he went 1 for 3 in each contest.
Due to weather, the teams will be off on Friday and then play a double header Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. Both games will last nine innings.
