Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team opened up the 2015 season by tying William Jewell College, 1-1 (2 OT), Friday afternoon in Liberty, Mo.
The Cardinals, from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, got on the board 13 minutes into the game when junior Emily Monroe scored after passes by senior Jade Gifford and Lea Maxwell.
Kearney native and senior
Nicole Potthoff picked a good time to tally her first goal as a Loper as she scored from five yards out at the 19:28 mark. Freshman
Tori Weber (Lincoln Southeast H.S.), one of five newcomers to crack the starting lineup, had the assist.
Over 120 minutes, UNK tallied 18 shots with WJC having 15. Both clubs had eight shots on goal with Kearney having two more corners, 7-5.
In the second OT period, Columbus sophomore
Emily Kosch and Colorado freshman
Shannon Duff took shots that were just a bit too high with Cardinal keeper Alex Dressman stopping a shot in the 117th minute taken by Hastings sophomore
Marika Van Brocklin.
Duff and fellow true freshmen
Kelsie Ienn (Papillion-LaVista H.S.) and Michaela Hoffman (Fruita, Colo.) each went the distance with senior co-captain
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion-LaVista South H.S.) tallying 111 minutes.
Hosterman (four) and Japanese native
Reina Horikawa and Ienn (three each) led Kearney in shots. Finally, true freshman
Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) replaced sophomore Jaclyn Padlock (North Platte H.S.) in the 24th minute and went on to stop six shots.
"We didn't play our best but it's our first game together as a group on the road and were able to fight through some nerves, the heat and travel," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We improved as the game went along and created many offensive chances. We need to get tighter defensively and cleaner on the ball and will be fine. We'll need to be sharper on Sunday against a very good Rockhurst team."
UNK plays RU in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks were picked to finish second in the 16-team GLVC.
