Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team scored the first eight points and never looked in back in a 69-36 rout of the Lincoln Blue Tigers Thursday evening in Jefferson City, Mo.
The Lopers (7-7, 3-5) improve to 3-4 on the road with LU (6-8, 2-6) dropping a fourth straight game.
The 33-point margin of victory is UNK's biggest in an MIAA game, besting a 21-point margin over Lincoln two years ago. Tonight, the Lopers held Lincoln to seven points in both the first and fourth quarters and had twice as many field goals, 26-13.
The 36 points is the fewest by a Kearney opponent since Western New Mexico ended with 35 in a January 2012 loss in the Health & Sports Center.
UNK came in having out rebounded its opponent in four of the last five games, pushing its season total to a plus 1.4. That margin will grow dramatically as Kearney had more offensive caroms (24) than the Blue Tigers had total rebounds (22). UNK added 28 defensive boards to finish with a total of 52, just 16 off the school mark.
Twelve different Lopers got in the game with nine reaching the scoring column. Grand Island sophomore
McKenzie Brown hit two early threes to help UNK get out to a 13-2 lead and finished with a team-high 17 points. She went 5 of 9 from behind the arc, tying her career-high in makes.
Lincoln did have one run in them, whittling down a 20-point deficit to a 36-25 score midway through the third quarter. However, UNK responded with a 23-4 run that featured two threes from Brown and one by senior guard
Laramey Becker (Trenton).
Becker went 6 of 13 from the floor to be the other Loper in double figures (16). Next, Alabama sophomore post
Imani Kyser returned from the disabled list to make four of five shots to tally nine with Kansas senior
Bri Starks, Lincoln freshman
Kennedy Sander and Kearney freshman
Brianna Miller scoring seven a piece.
Finally, Dannebrog junior guard
Courtney Aitken had a team-high 10 rebounds (five offensive), two points and two steals. She is now averaging 6.8 rebounds over the last five contests.
Lincoln didn't have a player reach double digits and was led by post Zuri Hill, who had seven points, five rebounds, two steals and a block.
Kearney is at Lindenwood Saturday afternoon. The Lions (7-7, 3-5) lost to No. 3 Fort Hays State tonight, 65-59.
