Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior guard Trey Moore made a driving layup with three seconds left to lift Hastings College to an 85-83 win over Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the 192nd all-time meeting between the longtime rivals. UNK drops to 2-1 while Hastings remains at 3-2 as this was an exhibition game for the NAIA Broncos.
A Loper redshirt during the 2013-14 season, Moore tallied a game-high 28 points to help his team rally from a 64-57 deficit with 10:30 to play. The Broncos went on an 11-0 spurt to erase that hole and outscored the Lopers 28-19 over the final 10 minutes.
In a game with 13 lead changes and 10 ties, it appeared Hastings was in control as they led 82-75 with 52 seconds remaining. After junior guard
Yashua Trent (Chicago, Ill.) made two free throws, Moore committed back-to-back turnovers. Those miscues led to four more points by Trent and suddenly it was a one-point game with 20 second to go.
Senior guard Rich Williams went one of two at the line soon after but Trent followed with an another quick layup, tying things up with five ticks left and getting
Junior Ty Danielson
Loper fans off their feet.
However, Moore calmly brought the ball up the court, drove down the lane, made a bucket and was fouled. While he missed the ensuing free throw, a 50-foot three point shot by junior
Trey Lansman (Harlan, Iowa) banged off the back of the iron as the buzzer sounded.
"The teams we played in Texas last weekend (Southern Arkansas and Henderson State) were athletic but didn't have as many shooters as Hastings. They (Broncos) were also tougher and a little bit more skilled than what we saw down there," said Loper head coach
Kevin Lofton.
Moore tallied 14 points in each half and finished 7 of 12 (4 of 6 threes) from the field and 10 of 12 at the line. He also had six defensive boards and three assists.
As a team, Hastings was 12 of 23 from behind the arc, went 21 of 26 at the line and had a plus 13 rebounding margin, 44-31. Four other Broncos reached double digits, including Williams (12).
UNK out shot Hastings by two percentage points, 46-44, but was 8 of 28 from the arc and 15 of 20 at the line. The Lopers did have a plus seven turnover margin and outscored the Broncos 38-26 in the paint.
Individually, Lansman was 10 of 21 from the field (2 of 6 threes) to tally a team-best 26. He also had eight boards, three blocks, two assists and a steal. Next, Trent went for 24 points on 8 of 12 (2 of 3 threes) shooting. In 28 total minutes, he also provided five assists, three steals and three boards.
Finally, off the bench, York junior
Ty Danielson had 12 points and six defensive rebounds.
UNK hosts 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines Sunday afternoon. The Orediggers (2-0) are at Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon.
