Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team sunk 37 free throws and junior
Trey Lansman had 25 second half points in a 92-91 win over Colorado-Colorado Springs Wednesday evening at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the Lopers (3-2) third straight game that went down to the wire. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions fall to 0-4.
In a game that featured 58 fouls, one technical foul and 83 free throw attempts, UNK led for 31 minutes. However, UCCS battled back from several deficits and hung around thanks to senior TreShawn Wilford.
The 6-5 wing had tallied 28 points over the first three games of the year but went for 32 today. He was 11 of 13 at the line, 10 of 18 from the field (1 of 3 threes) and also grabbed 11 boards (seven offensive).
Junior Yashua Trent
Equal to the task was Lansman (Harlan, Ia.). Sitting out the middle part of the second half due to foul trouble, the forward finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive). Lansman went 11 of 26 from the field (2 of 3 threes) and 9 of 10 at the line.
This is Lansman's fourth career 30-point game and third career double. His career-high point total of 35 came two years ago in a loss at Fort Hays State.
UCCS cut a 10-point deficit to one, 72-71, after a Wilford layup. UNK remained in the lead, getting a layup from Chicago junior guard
Yashua Trent to lead 80-74 at the 4:24 mark. On the Mountain Lions next possession, post Ed Bourke was called for a moving screen. The UCCS bench then was assessed a tech and the Loper lead grew by two more.
UNK fell to both Hastings College and 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines in the final seconds and UCCS was hoping for the trifecta. A three-point play from sophomore guard Ellijah Ross with 18 seconds left made it a one possession game, 90-88.
However, reserve freshman forward
Kyle Juhl (Harlan, Ia.) calmly made two free throws and, after a couple of misses, a meaningless three was sunk by Brandon Malone at the buzzer.
Besides Lansman's heroics, guards
Ty Danielson (15), Trent (14)
Isaiah McKay (13) scored in double figures with Juhl supplying nine points in seven minutes off the bench.
In a fairly even game statistically, UNK went 37 of 46 at the line while UCCS was 25 of 27. The 37 makes rank seventh most in Loper lore.
Having a plus 11 rebounding margin, the Mountain Lions also got 12 points from Ross and a near double double from starting forward Blend Avdilli (10 points & nine rebounds).
UNK is at Chadron State (0-3) Saturday afternoon.
