Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball made 12 three pointers, two shy of the school record, and had a big second half to beat Chadron State, 72-52, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.
With the win, the Lopers (2-4) stop a three-game losing streak and keep the Eagles (0-3) winless.
UNK came in among the national leaders in three point attempts, averaging 25 a game. The Lopers topped that mark by launching 30 today, tying the school record. The 2003-04 squad had 30 in a win over New Mexico Highlands while the Lopers took 30 in a November 16th win over Grace University.
For the season, Kearney has now taken 154 threes, 103 more than its opponents.
Junior guards
Michaela Barry (five) and
McKenzie Brown (four) combined for nine of the 12 makes. In December 2003, UNK had 14 triples to beat Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Chadron shot 50 percent (5 of 10) in the second quarter to lead 29-26 at the break. The Lopers, however, took control early in the third quarter when Barry knocked down two threes and Brown added another in less than two minutes. That capped a 10-0 UNK run and the Eagles didn't get closer than five points the rest of the day.
"We have good shooters. (That stretch in the third quarter) gives a team confidence. Especially when you can get one or two people to hit three in a row. It doesn't have to be yourself seeing the ball go through; it just has to be somebody. Those came because we were able to get stops and rebounds," said UNK head coach
Carrie Eighmey.
Kearney then poured it on in the fourth quarter, scoring another 23 points on 9 of 14 (64 percent) shooting.
Barry (19) and Brown (18) combined for 37 points as each made seven shots from the field. Next, Dannebrog senior
Courtney Aitken had an all-around effort (10 rebounds, eight points, four steals and three assists) with Arizona senior point guard
Alexa Hogberg having six assists and nine points.
Off the bench, junior guard
Abby Hix made two triples while senior post
Nieka Wheeler had three points and three rebounds. Both are from Independence, Mo.
Kalli Feddersen had 14 points and seven rebounds to pace the Eagles.
