Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball scored the game's first 10 points and then went on a 25-5 run in the second half to beat Wayne State, 75-63, Monday night at the Health Sports Center.
The Lopers, playing its seventh game in the last 17 days, improve to 5-2 while the Wildcats fall to 1-5. That includes a 1-3 mark against MIAA competition.
In the 162nd all-time meeting between the two on the hardwood, UNK led 10-0 by the 16:52 mark. The 'Cats missed its first three shots and also committed three turnovers. Meanwhile, the Lopers hit three shots and three free throws.
However, Wayne hung around and only trailed by six, 37-31, at the break. They then almost climbed the mountain, getting a layup from Kendall Jacks to make it 47-46 with 13:10 to play.
That's when Kearney's second big run occurred. Four free throws from York junior
Ty Danielson, two coming due to a technical on the Wayne bench, started a 12-0 spurt that blossomed into a 72-51 lead with 5:09 left.
UNK made all nine shots it attempted during this eight-minute stretch and also sunk six of seven free throws. Four of the made field goals were of the fast break variety as the 'Cats seemingly ran out of gas.
A balanced attack saw four Loper starters reach double digits, led by junior forward
Trey Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) with 18. He now has 967 points in his career; he'll be just the 42
nd Loper to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
Lansman (eight rebounds) just missed his third straight double double and also had four dimes. In the back court, Danielson (10), Chicago junior Yashua Trent (12) and Minnesota sophomore
Isaiah McKay (16) combined for 38 points with Trent adding five assists and three steals.
Finally, Iowa sophomore post Carter Burns (eight points & eight rebounds) got close to a double double with Pierce junior Lance Rohrich (seven points & three rebounds) leading the Loper bench.
Jacks, working around foul trouble, had a team-best 12 points to lead Wayne.
UNK is at Pittsburg State (1-6) Thursday night.
