Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team had 21 hits, six coming off the bat of senior shortstop
Shane Sharkey, to beat the Regis Rangers, 16-8, Saturday afternoon in Denver.
This was the second of a three-game series. The rubber match will be played Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Central.
To win for the first time in 2016, UNK scored in seven of the nine innings, including an eight spot in the sixth. The 21 hits, 17 being singles, were registered by seven players as each had at least two.
Using eight different pitchers, Regis was fortunate they gave up only 16 runs as UNK left 15 runners on base.
From the leadoff spot, Sharkey (McKinney, Texas) was 6 of 7 with two runs and four RBI's. His day included five singles and one of four UNK doubles.
Next, nine hole hitter
Matt Salamon (Owasso, Okla.) was 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBI's. Now batting .545 on the young season, the junior second baseman had a three-run double in the sixth.
Also swinging a red hot bat in the early going is redshirt freshman
Pate Katechis (Longmont, Colo.). At designated hitter today, he was 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBI's, upping his season average to .389 with a team-best eight RBI's.
On the mound, Grand Island senior
Chayse Gulzow did yeoman's work, throwing the last five innings to win for the second time. In a career-high inning total he fanned four Rangers, didn't walk a batter and allowed just four hits.
For a second straight day, Regis was led by first baseman/DH Dylan Navarro (3 for 3, two runs & three RBI's.).
