Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore right hander Noah Gotsis threw seven strong innings and leadoff hitter Josh Newell went 5 for 5 with five RBI's to help Regis hold off Nebraska-Kearney, 9-6, Sunday afternoon in Denver.
This was the rubber match of a three-game series with Regis improving to 4-2.
Earning his first win of 2016, Gotsis limited UNK to four hits and two runs over the first seven innings. He struck out seven, walked just one and didn't hit a batter. At the plate, Regis recorded 14 hits and took advantage of six Kearney errors to score twice in the first, four times in the second, one more in the third and twice in the fifth.
A junior center fielder, Newell had a two-run homer and a two-run double to pace the offense. Two other Rangers had multi-hit games, including two-hole hitter and third baseman Drew LaComb (2 for 4, two runs).
UNK tried to rally in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. Senior first baseman
Kyle Honeycutt (Millard South H.S.), already with a two-run homer in the eighth, delivered a two-run single up the middle. However, senior right hander Jake Long came in to record a fly out and earn the save.
Honeycutt finished 2 for 2 with four RBI's with junior second baseman
Matt Salamon (Owasso, Okla.) and redshirt freshman left fielder
Pate Katechis (Longmont, Colo.) having RBI singles in the fifth.
Finally, six Loper pitchers took to the mound with seniors
Jacob Dittman (Colo. Springs, Colo.) and
Joe Smidt (North Platte) throwing scoreless innings.
UNK starts MIAA play next weekend at Lincoln University (0-7) in Missouri.
