Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Four starters scored in double figures and the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team sunk 12 three pointers to roll past Southwest Baptist, 85-64, Thursday night on the Buckle Court at the Health & Sports Center.
Winners of four straight, UNK (13-8, 9-6) pays back SBU (9-12, 4-11) for a 70-60 setback back in December. That was the first of a three-game stretch in which senior post
Ethan Brozek didn't play in due to injury. The win also puts the Lopers into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings.
Continuing a recent hot stretch from behind the arc, the Lopers were 6 of 12 from three point land in the first half to build a 42-32 lead. Never trailing in the game, UNK made six more threes in the second half and also ended with 20 points off of 15 Bearcat turnovers.
Southwest Baptist hung around a bit, thanks to 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second chance points. However, the 'Cats shot just 36% (20 of 55) from the floor, partially due to eight UNK blocks.
Offensively, sophomores
Ty Danielson (York) and
Trey Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) scored 16 apiece with sophomore
Lane Rohrich (Pierce) at 15. In the middle, Brozek (Norfolk Catholic H.S.) had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in a team-high 35 minutes.
With 41 combined fouls called, several Lopers were in foul trouble. Lansman fouled out late, as did freshman reserve
Carter Burns (Ankeny, Ia.). Two others ended with four fouls, including Ravenna senior
Connor Beranek.
"The guys did a good job tonight. Southwest Baptist has a really difficult offense to guard. It reminds me of Mike Trader's motion offenses at Hastings," said UNK head coach
Kevin Lofton. "All it takes is one slip up by one player and they are going to score on you. We extended the lead at the start of the second half, instead of letting them hang around, and that's a sign of growth."
Playing an all-around solid game, Rohrich was 5 of 10 from the field (3 of 6 threes) and 2 of 2 at the line from his point guard position. He also had four assists, four steals, three rebounds and no turnovers in 31 minutes.
Danielson also had one of his better games of the year, sinking 5 of 9 field goals, grabbing five boards (three offensive) and having one of UNK's 10 steals. Off the bench, Burns was 3 of 4 from downtown, one of six Lopers to hit a trey.
"It's a credit to Lane, Ty and Carter. They stepped up and hit some shots. Ethan also was rock solid in leading our guys," said Lofton. "That's a sign we're getting better. We need those guys down the stretch. Teams are going to focus on Connor, Ethan and Trey."
Finally, besides his offense, Lansman had seven defensive rebounds and three blocks. The eight team stuffs is one off the Lopers season-high total, set in the season opener vs. Southern Nazarene.
For the 'Cats, reserve Andy Campbell finished with a team-best 16 points and added four offensive rebounds.
UNK hosts Central Missouri (13-8, 7-8) Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
