Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt freshman
Pate Katechis hit a one-out Grand Slam in the top of the sixth inning to help Nebraska-Kearney rally past Central Missouri, 5-4, Sunday in Warrensburg.
The Lopers (11-10, 8-4) trailed by scores of 2-0, 2-1 and 4-1. In the sixth, Omaha sophomore designated hitter
Dallas Schramm was hit by the very first pitch of the inning. That closed the book on Mule starter Carlos D'Armas.
Omaha senior first baseman
Kyle Honeycutt (2 for 4) followed with a single to center and then Minnesota junior catcher
Kirk McLeod walked on five pitches. UCM reliever Reece Ponak got a strikeout but then Katechis (Longmont, Colo.) stepped to the plate.
The left fielder blasted his team-leading seventh homer of the year down the left field line on a 1-2 count. Katechis also leads UNK in RBI's with 32.
Senior relief pitchers
Chris Sievers (Loveland, Colo.) and
Chayse Gulzow (Grand Island H.S.) then shut the door, blanking UCM over the final four innings. The pair combined for four strikeouts, no hits and just one walk.
The Mules (11-8, 9-3), thanks to an error, did have the potential tying run in scoring position in the ninth. However, Gulzow got a ground ball out to record his second career save. Going 3.2 innings, Sievers is now 3-0 in 2016 and 7-2 his two-year Loper career.
UNK begins a four-game home stand Tuesday afternoon when Northwest Missouri State visits at 3:00 p.m. That is the first of threebgames with the Bearcats (13-9, 8-4) over the next three weeks.
