Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore right fielder
Kaela Samek went 5 for 5 with five RBI's to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep Colorado Christian, 8-6 and 12-1 (5 innings), Tuesday afternoon at Dryden Park.
UNK (14-16) has now won six straight games, its longest win streak in four years.
In game one, the Lopers jumped out to a quick lead as they scored four runs in its first at bat. Samek (Lincoln Pius X) and junior designated player
Kayla Carter (Mesa, Ariz.) both delivered two run singles with two down.
However, the lead was short lived as CCU scored three in the second and one in the third. UNK countered with the game's next four runs, including an RBI single by Samek (3 for 3, two runs) in the fourth.
The Cougars (6-26) scored two in its half of the fifth but Canadian junior Kam Merrill earned her second save by allowing no hits over the final three frames. California senior
Nicole Larsen (4-6) worked into the fifth to pick up the win.
Merrill (7-6) came back to earn the win in the night cap, fanning five and giving up just two hits over four innings. Sophomore lefty
Morgan Karlberg (Eaton, Colo.) worked a clean fifth inning.
At the plate, Kearney scored seven times in the second. The eight-hit inning featured all singles, including a two-run shot to center by senior catcher
Erin Dwyer (2 for 3, two runs).
Samek, from the six hole, went 2 for 2 with a run and two RBI's. Finally, junior left fielder
Taylre Keenan (Ralston) went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
UNK is supposed to host CCU again on Wednesday afternoon but those games will likely be canceled due to weather. The Lopers thus head to Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State this weekend to start a 10-game road swing.
