Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore
Dallas Schramm hit two more home runs and drove in eight to help Nebraska-Kearney out score Pittsburg State, 21-11 (8 innings), in the first game of a double header Friday at Memorial Field.
The Lopers (16-21, 13-15) couldn't complete the series sweep as they stranded 12 runners in the night cap and fell 10-9. The Gorillas (10-27, 5-23) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a passed ball and error.
The first game featured 32 runs on 28 hits, 19 walks, six hit batters and five errors. Pitt scored two runs in each of the first two innings but UNK threw up a 10 spot in the third and tallied five more in the fourth and four in the eighth.
A catcher and designated hitter, Schramm (Millard North H.S.) hit five homers in five straight games before going 3 for 4 with a double in last night's 9-5 win. Today, he belted a Grand Slam to start the monster third inning.
In the double digit frame, UNK had five of its 14 hits with senior first baseman
Kyle Honeycutt (Millard South H.S.) capping things with a two-run shot to left. From the three-hole, he finished 3 for 5 with three runs and five RBI's.
From his cleanup spot, Schramm went 3 for 6 with two runs and those eight RBI's as he belted a three-run shot that hit the scoreboard in left center in the eighth. An RBI single by junior third baseman
Brent Kirsch (Papillion) scored the 21
st run and ended things due to the MIAA 10-run rule.
Colorado senior
Chris Sievers (4-2) earned the win by fanning five over 4.1 innings. Besides Schramm and Honeycutt, Lincoln junior center fielder
Easton Edmond went 1 for 1 with four runs and two RBI's.
The Gorillas also started the second game fast, scoring two in the first, one in the second and three more in the third. Right fielder Christian Arnold (2 for 5, two runs) hit a three-run dinger in the third, one of PSU's 11 hits in the game.
UNK finally erased a 6-1 deficit by the seventh inning when junior second baseman
Matt Salamon (4 for 5, two RBI's) scored on a wild pitch. That made it nine all but PSU reliever Tripp Tucker (1-0) got a ground ball double play two batters latter to minimize the damage.
The Lopers also had the potential tying run reach third base in the eighth and ninth innings but Drake Herrmann got a fly out and strikeout to end each inning. That allowed him to earn his first save of 2016.
Finishing with 16 hits, Kearney saw Texas sophomore third baseman
Josh Estrada go 3 for 4 with three runs and two solo homers. Finally, Colorado redshirt freshman catcher
Tanner Kirkpatrick went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI's.
Weather permitting, UNK hosts Fort Hays State Tuesday night.
