Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Northwest Missouri State softball team got complete games from pitchers Sarah Baldwin and Kendie Schieber, and took advantage of six errors, to take a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 7-2 and 5-1, Saturday in Maryville.
The Bearcats (27-9, 11-5), ranked as high as 16th in Division II this year, scored three unearned runs in game one and five more in the nightcap. They were also generous as the Lopers (14-22, 5-13) lone run in game two was of the unearned variety.
In the early contest, Northwest used three hits and a walk to jump out to a 2-0 first inning lead. Kearney countered with a two-spot in the second, getting an RBI single from sophomore right fielder
Kaela Samek (Lincoln Pius X) and seeing senior left fielder
Paige Hamelin (Payson, Ariz.) score on a double steal.
However, the 'Cats took advantage of two UNK errors to break the tie in the bottom of the inning. They then scored three insurance runs in the fifth.
Schieber (15-5) threw 103 pitches in a three-hit complete game. She fanned five and walked two while not hitting a Loper. At the plate, she was the Northwest star, going 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI's from the six-hole.
The 'Cats also grabbed an early lead in game two as they scored four times in the second. The big blow was a two-out, three-run triple to right center from leadoff hitter Torri Blythe (2 for 3). Baldwin (6-4) did the rest, tossing a three-hit complete game as she struck out five and walked one.
Canadian junior
Kami Merrill (7-8) was the touch luck loser as she also went the distance. Throwing 118 pitchers, she allowed no earned runs on four walks and seven hits.
UNK is at No. 22 Missouri Western State on Sunday afternoon.
