Nationally-Ranked Griffons Down UNK

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior Richard Peeples threw seven innings to pick up his eighth win of the season and center fielder Nick Gawley had four RBI's as Missouri Western State beat Nebraska-Kearney, 10-3, Friday night in St. Joseph.

This was the first of a three-game series. The nationally-ranked Griffons are now 30-11 (22-8) with the Lopers slipping to 17-22 (14-16).

Peeples (8-3) tossed 118 pitches, 76 for strikes. He worked around 10 hits and two walks by fanning four and getting his teammates to turn four double plays. Blanking UNK over the first four innings, he allowed three runs, all earned.

Offensively, Western struck for a run in the first, two in the third and then exploded for four in the sixth. The big blow was a two out, bases clearing triple by Gawley (3 for 5) that was preceded by three straight singles.

MWSU's cleanup hitter, Gawley saw the batter in front of him, second baseman David Glaude, go 3 for 5 with two RBI's and a run. The Griffons finished with 16 hits with five starters having two or more.

Registering 11 hits, UNK was led by Kansas junior right fielder Jacob Richardson (2 for 5, two RBI's) and Oklahoma junior second baseman Matt Salamon (2 for 4, one run & one RBI). On the mound, Iowa junior Weston Glienke fanned two and didn't walk a batter in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

First pitch on Saturday will be at 1:00 p.m.
