Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Right handers Alex Clavet and Preston Bailey combined to throw a five-hitter and second baseman David Glaude went 4 for 5 to help No. 23 Missouri Western State beat Nebraska-Kearney, 8-2, Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph.
The result helped the Griffons (31-12, 23-9) win the series over the Lopers (18-23, 15-17) and improve to 10-8 at home.
After upsetting Mo West by a 2-1 score on Saturday, the Lopers again kept things tight. Senior
John Watson (Shawnee, Okla.) threw well in his second career start, allowing no walks and given up just four runs over five full innings.
However, UNK couldn't solve Clavet (5-1) or Bailey (four saves), who combined for 10 strikeouts and three walks. Of the Lopers five hits, four were singles.
The Griffons broke a one all tie in the fourth by hitting back-to-back doubles. An error brought home another run and then MWSU tallied five more runs between the sixth and eighth innings.
Glaude scored twice and had three RBI's, two coming in the eighth inning. He finished the series 7 for 14 with five RBI's. Besides Gawley, three others Griffons tallied two hits.
Loper leadoff hitter and senior shortstop
Shane Sharkey (McKinney, Texas) went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI while junior center fielder
Easton Edmond (Lincoln SW H.S.) doubled and scored once.
Weather permitting, UNK finishes is three-game series at Fort Hays State (18-25, 12-20) Wednesday night. The Lopers then play at Southwest Baptist Thursday-Saturday.
