Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt freshman catcher Hunter Hisky hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Southwest Baptist beat Nebraska-Kearney, 10-9, Thursday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.
This was the opener of a three-game series. SBU improves to 20-24 (15-19) and is now tied with UNK (18-25) for ninth place in the MIAA standings. The top eight teams at the end of next weekend make the league tournament.
SBU led 2-0 after the first inning but the Lopers eventually went ahead by scores of 7-3 and 9-7. The 'Cats, who committed five errors on the day, tied things at nine in the eighth thanks to a walk, double, single and sac fly.
The Lopers got a two-out single in the top of the ninth but Calvin Loving (3-1) got a strikeout to give his team a chance to win in regulation.
Designated hitter/pitcher Carter Sherban doubled to left to start the bottom of the ninth. After pinch runner Austin Martin moved up 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch, he scored on Hisky's single through the right side. The eight-hole hitter finished 3 for 5 with a run scored.
Besides Hisky, SBU's three through six hitters were a combined 10 for 17 with five runs and seven RBI's. Finally, Sherban struck out two to work a clean eighth inning.

Due to weather, the teams will play a double header (two 9-inning games) Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
