Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Relief pitcher Jaren Kutzke struck out seven in 3.1 innings of work and Washburn recorded 21 hits to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 14-7, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The Ichabods (18-12, 11-7) won all three games in the series to move into sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA standings.
In a game that featured 21 runs on 34 hits, six walks and two errors, both teams scored five runs in the fourth inning. UNK (12-17, 9-11) erased a 7-2 deficit by using three hits, three walks and a hit batter in its half of the long inning.
However, the Ichabods scored two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to resume control. Washburn finished the day with four doubles, one triple and four homers. Eight of the nine starters had at least two hits, including first baseman Lance Barkley (4 for 5, three runs).
Barkley then moved to the mound and worked a scoreless ninth. After UNK got to starter Dan Gabler in the fifth, Kutzke (2-1) came in and was a bit wild early. But, the big lefty eventually settled down and allowed one hit and a walk in just over three innings to earn the victory.
Tallying 13 hits, the Lopers saw Minnesota junior catcher
Kirk McLeod go 3 for 5 with a run scored while Papillion junior
Brent Kirsch was 1 for 4 with two RBI's. On the bump, Colorado senior
Jacob Dittman fanned two in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief work.
