Kearney Rally Falls Short, 11-6

Dallas Schramm
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Dallas Schramm homered for the third straight game but it wasn't enough as Nebraska-Kearney fell 11-6 to Northeastern State Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah.

The RiverHawks (18-15, 12-11) scored the game's first 10 runs, including an eight-spot in the second. That inning featured five of NSU's 11 hits, highlighted by a two-run double from second baseman Charles Sims (2 for 3).

With senior reliever John Watson (Shawnee, Okla.) doing some yeoman's work by limiting NSU to one earned run over a career-high six innings, the Lopers (13-19, 10-13) tried to come back.

A five-run Kearney fourth featured a three-run shot down the left field line by Schramm (Millard North H.S.). Finishing 2 for 4 with four RBI's, the catcher and designated hitter now has six homers on the season.

Schramm later added an RBI double in the seventh but NSU reliever Jake Kern earned the save by allowing just that one run in four full innings of work. Over the last three games, Schramm is 7 for 13 (.538) with four runs and eight RBI's. Besides his three bombs, his seven hits include two doubles.

From the leadoff spot, senior shortstop Shane Sharkey (McKinney, Texas) went 2 for 5 with an RBI while sophomore third baseman Josh Estrada (Houston, Texas) scored twice for the second consecutive day.

Besides Sims, NSU saw catcher Eric Kirkpatrick finish 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI's from the third spot in the order.

The series finale was moved up to a noon start on Sunday.
