Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Wayne State Wildcats tallied goals in the 24th and 75th minutes to beat Nebraska-Kearney,
2-0, Wednesday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
The win capped a busy four-day stretch for the 'Cats. Wayne won Sunday at Colorado-Colorado Springs, 3-1, and Tuesday night at Colorado Christian, 1-0.
UNK (1-2-0) out shot Wayne, 14-9, and also had three more corners, 5-2. However, senior keeper Kyle Comba made eight saves to lift the Black & Gold to its second all-time win over the Lopers.
"It's pretty impressive what they've done. We ran at them in the second half and thought they would eventually get tired," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We weren't good enough in the first half. We were much better in the second half but made some mistakes that gave them two goals."
Sophomore Samantha Phillips tallied her second goal of the year midway through the first half when she fired at the Loper goal from the right corner. The ball managed to squirt through the hands of keeper
Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic H.S.) after initially being saved. While the redshirt freshman regained control, the ball was already past the goal line.
Soon after Kearney had a golden chance to tie things at one but Comba stopped a direct kick. Offensively, six different Lopers had a shot on goal in the contest, including two from both
Marika Van Brocklin (Hastings) and
Caitlin Rerucha (Skutt Catholic H.S.).
"We couldn't finish any of our own chances. We created a lot of chances and should've scored several goals. You're not going to win if you can't finish one or two of them. You then can't make mistakes on the back end," said Maessner.
With 15 minutes remaining, sophomore Carys Hund stole a shanked kick deep in Loper territory. Her header slowly rolled into the corner of the UNK net for a two goal lead.
Prososki finished with six saves with Columbus freshman
Maddie Love getting off two shots in 24 minutes off the bench.
"We're all still excited and I think everyone can see the potential of this team. We're doing a lot of good things," said Maessner. "We're all going to make mistakes. We just have to learn to clean some of that stuff up."
Both the Wildcats (Sept. 9) and Lopers (Sept. 11) host Augustana later this week.
