Ten More 3's, Defense Lead to Another Win

23 & 7 again for Michaela Barry
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team made 10 three pointers and shut down Lincoln in the second half of a 70-58 win Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (7-12, 3-8) have won three of its last four games to vault into a ninth place tie in the MIAA standings.

In a Thursday night win over Lindenwood, juniors Michaela Barry (Norfolk Catholic) and McKenzie Brown (G.I. Northwest) combined for 43 points and 12 made threes. UNK finished the night 13 of 23 from behind the arc, just one make from tying the school record.

The numbers were similar again today as Barry and Brown combined for 46 points on eight made threes. Finishing 10 of 21 from the three point line, this is the first time since November 2014 UNK has had back-to-back games with double digit made threes.

"Michaela and McKenzie are two really good shooters and we count on them to produce offense for us. When they are able to knock down threes, it opens up the rest of their game," said Loper head coach Carrie Eighmey.

Lincoln (3-16, 2-10) shook off six made Loper threes in the first 10 minutes to have a 23-point second quarter and lead 40-35 at the break. Most of the damage came from guard Azaria Nave, who went 4 of 5 from long range to score 14 points.

However, the Blue Tigers were stone cold in the second half, going 4 of 30 (0 for 12 threes), to tally 18 points. They finished the day at 32 percent (19 of 59).

"Both Kelsey (Fitzgerald) and Imani (Kyser) having been playing well for us, especially defensively. They have both been good on the boards and defensively, the last couple of games, the opponents post players have really struggled," said Eighmey.

UNK still had to work for the win as they were up just 50-47 late in the third quarter. A quick four points in the final 25 seconds of the third pushed the lead to seven and then the Lopers held a double digit advantage for most of the fourth quarter.

Having 23 points and seven boards for a second straight game, Barry was 7 of 19 (4 of 8 threes) from the field and 5 of 6 at the line. All seven of her caroms came on the defensive end and she also had two assists and two of UNK's three steals.

Next, Brown tallied a career-high 23 points by going 7 of 13 (4 of 9 threes) from the floor and 5 of 5 at the line. Two years ago, she had 22 point efforts at Mary (N.D.) and Central Oklahoma.

Out rebounding LU by a 47-37 margin, UNK was led on the glass by Dannebrog senior Courtney Aitken. She pulled down a career-best 11 with four coming on the offensive end. She also had a team-best five assists.

Finally, off the bench, Kyser (Madison, Ala.) had nine rebounds (three offensive), five points and a block.

Nave finished with 17 points to be one of three Lincoln players in double figures.

UNK heads to Washburn and nationally-ranked Emporia State next weekend.
