Big Second Half Propels Lopers, 79-65

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior forward Trey Lansman sophomore guard Isaiah McKay combined for 42 points to help Nebraska-Kearney have a big second half in a 79-65 win over Southwest Baptist Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK improves to 11-3 (4-1) and 5-0 on a long home stand while the Bearcats drop to 8-5 (1-3).

Thanks to 58 percent shooting from the field, SBU led by as many as six in the first half and 38-35 at the break. However, the 'Cats cooled to 29 percent shooting in the second half while also finishing with 19 turnovers and a 16 of 28 effort from the line.

Using some full court pressure most of the game, UNK turned those 19 miscues into 19 points. The Lopers also went 14 of 17 at the line and made 53 percent (16 of 30) of its shots after the break. That included a solid 6 of 11 effort from behind the arc and was one reason Kearney outscored SBU 44-27 over the final 20 minutes.

A steal by junior guard Yashua Trent (Chicago) led to two free throws from McKay (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with 14:23 to play and broke a 53-all tie. Threes from Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) and junior guard Ty Danielson (York) followed over the next two minutes and the Lopers suddenly led by seven.

SBU didn't get closer than five points the rest of the way as UNK held a double digit cushion over the final 7:46.

Lansman went 9 of 17 (3 of 5 threes) from the field to score a game-high 22. He had 15 second half points and also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds (five defensive).
Next, McKay tallied 20 thanks to 7 of 14 (1 of 4 threes) shooting. He went 5 of 5 at the line and also supplied three boards, two assists and a steal in 35 minutes.

Also for UNK, Danielson (14) had 10 second half points with Trent working around foul trouble to have eight points, six dimes, four rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes.

SBU was paced by post Brian Patterson (15 points and six rebounds) and wing Cartree Pettis (12 points, nine rebounds and four assists).

UNK hosts Central Missouri Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Mules (8-4, 2-2) fell at Fort Hays State, 74-73, tonight.
