Kearney, Neb. – The Lindenwood Lions tallied goals in the 86th and 90th minutes to rally past Nebraska Kearney, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
Beating UNK in overtime for a second straight season, LWU improves to 4-6 (1-2) and stops a five game losing streak. The Lopers fall to 3-5-2 (0-3) and drop to 3-4-9 in its last 13 OT contests.
Facing a stiff breeze over the first 45 minutes, the Lopers controlled the action, out shooting LWU 8-3. Seeing several golden opportunities go by the board, UNK finally scored in the 36th minute when Colorado freshman
Parker Humpal fired from about 25 yards out and found the upper right corner of the Lions goal. This was Humpal's first career goal and first career shot.
LWU did take four corners in the first half and a potential goal off one of them was wiped out due to a foul. In the second half, the Lions faced the wind but started to get back into the game.
The Lions had four more corners after half time but UNK killed each one. The Lopers got off four shots in this half, the last one being a bit too high off the foot of Hastings senior
Kaitlyn Pawloski in the 74th minute.
Twelve minutes later, senior Alyssa Houck got down the field and took a pass from freshman Morgan Weller. She managed to twirl around her Loper defender in the box and promptly recorded her third goal of the season.
Just 31 seconds into sudden death, sophomore Jordan Wipke let loose from about 45 yards out. Likely trying to just clear the ball, Wipke's shot had some spin on it and was going against the wind. It bounced on the Cope turf near the goal line and over the head of Loper keeper
Ali Hirschman (Millard South).
Overall, UNK out shot LWU by a 12-8 margin but the Lions had five more corners, 8-3. Colorado junior Michaela Hoffman (four) was the Loper shot leader with Hastings senior
Marika Van Brocklin and Kearney sophomore
Molly Willis playing all 100 minutes.
Kearney heads to Missouri Western State and Northwest Missouri State next weekend.
