Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior right hander
Weston Glienke got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth and Nebraska-Kearney scored four unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat Ouachita Baptist (
pronounced Wash-ih-taw), 11-7, Friday evening in Arkadelphia, Ark.
UNK evens its record at 3-3 while the Tigers, from the Great American Conf. (GAC), fall to 0-6.
Down 4-0 right off the bat, the Lopers recorded a four spot in the top of the second to quickly tie things up. The two teams then went back and forth with UNK getting a sac fly from sophomore left fielder
Pate Katechis (Longmont, Colo.) in the top of the eighth to knot the score at seven.
Three Loper relievers –
Clay Collison (Algona, Ia.),
Cameron Burkey (McCook) and
Travis Edgar (Gypsum, Colo.) – combined for no earned runs and just one hit between the sixth and eighth innings. OBU did take advantage of a Loper error to score once in the seventh. Overall, the teams combined for eight miscues on the day, as well as 24 runners left on base.
The Tigers managed to get within 90 feet of a victory as they used a walk and two singles to load the bases with one down in the ninth. However, Glienke got eight-hole hitter Kord Offenback (2 for 4) looking and then left fielder Chandler Blake (0 for 5) popped up to short.
UNK's momentum continued as junior center fielder
Sean Maruo and first baseman
Ricky Trammell (2 for 6, two runs & two RBI's) started the tenth by reaching on back-to-back errors. A single down the left line off the bat of junior right fielder
Brooks Benson (3 for 5) was the game winner.
Three more insurance runs came soon after, two scoring on a triple to left by junior designated hitter
Billy Hayes (Lemont, Ill.)
Glienke recorded another strikeout in the bottom of the inning to record his second win as a Loper. Besides Benson (Parker, Colo.) and Trammell (Kansas City), junior catcher
Dallas Schramm (Millard North) and freshman shortstop
Calvin Rudolph (Millard South) both went 2 for 5 and scored twice.
UNK heads back to Henderson State on Saturday to face the Truman State (Mo.) Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m. A former MIAA school, TSU begins its season Friday with a night game vs. Central Missouri.
