Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The St. Cloud State Huskies used two big innings to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 9-1 (6 innings) and 7-4, Friday morning in Minnesota.
The games are part of the annual
Kelly Laas Memorial Invite and played inside the Husky Dome.
To remain perfect on the season, SCSU (6-0) had a five-run fourth inning in game one and a four-run first in the night cap.
Senior first baseman Jessica Goerger went 2 for 4 with a run and five RBI's to spark the Husky offense in the opener. She had a two-run homer in the sixth and a three-run triple in the fifth. Senior and North Dakota transfer Megan Hedstrom earned the win by throwing a complete game three-hitter. She fanned two Lopers and walked one.
UNK saw Papillion freshman second baseman
Sara Sempek go 1 for 2 with an RBI single to left in the fifth.
The Lopers out hit the Huskies, 11-9, in game two but left seven runners on base. SCSU's big first inning featured a walk and four hits, the biggest being a two-run homer by senior catcher Alyssa Coletto (1 for 3).
In the bottom of the second, back-to-back UNK errors allowed the Huskies to score two more runs. Utah junior
Abbey Martin settled down after that, blanking SCSU in three of the last four innings.
At the plate, the top of the Kearney lineup provided the pop. Ralston senior left fielder
Taylre Keenan and California freshman designated player
Macey Nelson both went 2 for 4 with Colorado junior
Meg Housholder finishing 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI's. Usually at pitcher or DP, she made her first career start in right field.
Finally, senior second baseman
Molly Stern (Phoenix) had a two-run double in a four-run third.
UNK faces the Augustana Vikings (1-4) in a double header Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. Augie plays two games on Friday afternoon.
