Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior
Mitchell Robinson won another game and the bottom of the order supplied the offense as Nebraska-Kearney beat Truman State, 9-5, Saturday evening in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The game was part of the Henderson State Classic. UNK is now 4-3 while the Bulldogs, a former MIAA member that now plays in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, falls to 0-2.
UNK scored three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to grab a 5-1 lead. Robinson (Golden, Colo.) shut out the 'Dawgs in three straight innings but ran into some trouble in the top of the sixth.
With one down, a ground out moved runners to second and third. Catcher Jason Priest (2 for 4) brought them home with a single to center and then third baseman Chris Iliopoulos (2 for 4, two runs) tied things up with a homer.
Kearney wasted little time grabbing the momentum back as they loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh thanks to two walks and a hit batter. Junior catcher
Billy Hayes (Lemont) drew another base on balls to put the Lopers ahead for good.
Junior third baseman
Brent Kirsch (Papillion-LaVista South) followed with a two-run single and then senior second baseman
Matt Salamon (Owasso, Okla.) laced a single to center to bring home another teammate.
This trio, batting seventh through ninth in the lineup, combined to go 8 for 9 with seven RBI's and four runs scored. Salamon was 4 for 4, Kirsch had three RBI's and Hayes scored twice.
On the mound, Robinson (2-0) allowed five earned on eight hits and three walks. He didn't hit a batter and fanned three. Senior right handers
Derek Clausen (Beatrice) and
Sean Laughlin (Overland Park, Kan.) combined to blank Truman over the final three innings.
UNK heads back across the street to face the Ouachita Baptist Tigers on Sunday.
