Michaela Barry and
McKenzie Brown combined for 36 points as the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team led from start to finish in a 73-70 win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah, Okla.
UNK (11-14, 7-10) has now won four in a row and is tied with Missouri Southern State and Southwest Baptist for eighth place in the MIAA standings. The Lopers are at SBU next Saturday to close out the regular season.
Barry (Norfolk Catholic) and Brown (G.I. Northwest) combined to go for 7 for 15 from behind the three point line. As a team, UNK was 9 of 24 downtown while being 14 of 28 from inside the arc.
Leading by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Lopers had to sweat out a second win over the RiverHawks (6-19, 2-15) in the last week. NSU outscored UNK 27-20 in the fourth quarter and a got a three from Caitlyn Long with three seconds to go to finish the scoring.
The Lopers managed to close things out by getting the ball in-bounded.
Continuing her hot shooting of late, Brown went for a game-high 22 thanks to 7 of 14 (4 of 8 threes) shooting. Scoring 10 of her points in the final quarter, she also had seven defensive boards, two assists and two steals in 36 minutes. Brown now sits with 908 career, points, tied for 30th in school history.
Next, Barry tallied 14 by making 3 of 7 three point shots. She also had four assists and six rebounds (five defensive). Including her time at Wayne State and Hastings College, Barry has an even 900 points in her career.
Seven others Lopers scored between two and nine points, including Alabama junior reserve forward
Imani Kyser. She had eight points on 4 of 4 free throw shooting while also blocking two shots in 12 minutes played.
NSU saw four players score in double figures, led by starter Rylie Torrey with 19.
UNK is at Fort Hays State Tuesday night. The Tigers (19-7, 10-7) fell at 18th-ranked Central Oklahoma on Saturday, 76-72.
