Juniors Power UNK to Game 1 Win

Junior C/DH Dallas Schramm is batting .733
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb – Junior Dallas Schramm went 4 for 5 with four RBI's and junior right hander Mitchell Robinson struck out six in six innings to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Metro State, 6-2, in the first game of a double header Sunday in Denver.

The Roadrunners scored five in the third and six more times in the fourth to erase a 6-0 Loper lead in game two and went on to win, 12-7. The comeback allowed the series to be split.

In the early game, Robinson (Golden, Colo.) won for the seventh time in a UNK uniform as he allowed six hits and a walk over six full innings. He blanked the 'Runners in four innings and then gave way to right hander Jared Bell (Clackamas, Oreg.).

The junior newcomer saved his second straight game by fanning six in just three innings of work. The former Scottsdale C.C. Fighting Artichoke allowed two hits and didn't walk a batter and now has seven K's in 3.1 innings of work.

At the plate, Schramm (Millard North) crushed again from the cleanup spot. He had an RBI single in the first, a three-run shot in the third and scored in the fifth after a double to left. In the second game, playing catcher, he went 3 for 3 with a run scored and five more RBI's.

On the weekend, Schramm went 11 for 15 (.733) with four doubles, three HR's and 13 RBI's. He also was perfect in 14 fielding chances

Besides Schramm's heroics, sophomore left field Pate Katechis (Longmont, Colo.) went 2 for 3 with two runs and a solo homer in game one. He added an RBI double in the second game.

UNK led that contest 5-0 after 2.5 innings thanks to another Schramm three-run shot. However, Metro took advantage of two errors to score five times in the bottom of the third to quickly tie things up.

The 'Runner fourth then featured four hits, two walks and another Loper miscue in the field. Overall, six of MSUD's runs were of the unearned variety.

Eight different Kearney players took to the mound, the most effective being senior right hander Sean Laughlin (Overland Park, Kan.). He allowed no earned runs in his lone inning of work while fanning three.

Metro was led by senior catcher Nick McCasky (3 for 4, two runs & three RBI's), leadoff hitter Donny Ortiz Jr. (2 for 5 with two RBI's) and a bullpen that threw three scoreless innings.

UNK heads to Arkadelphia, Ark., next weekend to play games at Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist (pronounced Wash-ih-taw)
