Sioux Falls Wins Marathon Home Opener

Box Score Kearney Neb. – Junior second baseman Brent Jarvis went 6 for 6 with three RBI's to help Sioux Falls beat Nebraska-Kearney, 11-7, Monday evening at Memorial Field.

This was UNK's home opener as last week's contest against Peru State was postponed due to high winds.

On a frigid day at the ballpark, the teams combined for 18 runs on 29 hits, 15 walks, three balks, three wild pitches and two errors. The damage could've been more but a total of 25 runners (13 for USF and 12 for UNK) were left on base as five double plays were turned.

The Cougars (2-5) used four different pitchers while the Lopers (7-12) sent 10 players to the mound in a game that lasted 3:58.

Playing for the first time since February 26th, USF tallied three runs in the third and ninth innings and added two more in the eighth. UNK mounted several comebacks, scoring twice in its half of the fifth and eighth innings, but couldn't catch the Cougs.

The contest ended when the Lopers hit into their third double play of the game. USF lefty Zachary Miller threw the last 2.0 innings and, with one down and the bases full in the ninth, got a 6-4-3 ground ball.

Batting from the two hole, Jarvis scored three times and had two doubles among his six hits. Sioux Falls finished with 16 hits but had more than its fair share of bleeders and seeing-eye singles.

Right behind Jarvis in the order was first baseman Josh Rehwaldt (3 for 6, four RBI's) with reliever Dan Johnson picking up the win as he allowed no earned in 2.0 innings of work.

Omaha junior designated hitter Dallas Schramm (3 for 5, three RBI's) and Colorado junior shortstop Scott Platt (3 for 4, two RBI's) paced UNK.

The second-ranked Central Missouri Mules (15-4, 5-1) come to Memorial Field for three MIAA games this weekend. First pitch Friday is set for 2:00 p.m.
