Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team fell to Northern State, 4-2, and Winona State, 4-0, Sunday at the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Lopers finished the three-day tournament with a 2-4 record.
Early in the morning against the NSU Wolves (15-9), UNK tied things at two by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and one out, California freshman second baseman and leadoff hitter
Macey Nelson hit an RBI single up the middle.
After an NSU pitching change, Arizona senior second baseman
Molly Stern (2 for 3) putt down a successful safety squeeze bunt to knot things up. NSU got out of the inning with a ground out to short.
With one down in the seventh, the Wolves used a walk and two singles to take the lead. A Loper error added an insurance run.
UNK was led by Arizona freshman center fielder
Nicole Spykstra (3 for 4) and Lexington junior third baseman
Halle Gydesen (2 for 2, one run). NSU had three players have multi-hit efforts, including nine-hole hitter Courtney Sjerven (2 for 3, two RBI's).
Late in the day, Winona State (19-6) scored all four of its runs in the top of the fourth. Finishing the game with just seven hits, the Warriors big inning featured two singles, a walk and a two-run triple by shortstop Lani Van Zyl (1 for 2, one run).
True freshman Jordyn Kleman (6-4) threw a complete game three-hitter as she struck out six and walked none. For the Lopers, Utah junior
Abbey Martin threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
UNK heads to Wayne State on Tuesday. The double header was originally set for Wednesday but recently moved up a day.
