Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior Brendan Feldmann struck out 14 in game one and true freshman Blake Beckmann fanned seven in the second game to help Lindenwood sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 3-1 and 7-5, Friday night in St. Charles, Mo.
Due to expected poor weather over the weekend, the three-game series was moved up to Thursday and Friday. With temperatures in the 70's today, the teams decided to play two and then one on Friday.
UNK (7-10, 0-5) almost rallied from a 5-0 hole in the night cap as they scored five runs over the seventh and eighth innings. However, the Lions (12-7, 5-3) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and got out of some late jams to hold on.
A 6-2 right hander, Beckmann (4-1) struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in six full innings. Not hitting a Loper, he ran into trouble in the seventh when the first two Lopers singled. During the first three at bats of the inning, two errors and a wild pitch got UNK on the board. Junior slugger
Dallas Schramm (Millard North H.S.) then belted his fourth dinger, a two-run shot, of the year.
Beckmann remained in and junior third baseman
Brent Kirsch (Papillion) and senior right fielder
Jacob Richardson (2 for 4) continued the Loper rally with back-to-back singles. After a pitching change, Richardson (Goddard, Kan.) scored on an RBI ground out by senior second baseman
Matt Salamon (2 for 4) but Kirsch would be stranded at third.
Lindenwood grabbed all the momentum back in the bottom of the inning and they used a single, two errors, a passed ball and balk to go up 7-4. Schramm (2 for 4) countered with a two-out RBI double to right center in the eighth but was stranded at second.
Lion closer Connor Law (1-0, four saves) started the UNK ninth and promptly got two outs. Salamon (Owasso, Okla.) and junior leadoff hitter
Scott Platt (2 for 5) followed with singles to make things interesting but a line out to first finally ended the long day.
Besides the freshman hurler, LWU saw its first five batters go a combined 9 for 22 with seven runs and four RBI's.
In game one, Feldmann (2-0) showed why he came in with 32 strikeouts to only four walks. He struck out 14 Lopers (11 swinging) and walked three over 8.1 innings. Throwing 121 pitches, Feldmann struck out the side in the eighth and didn't allow an earned run.
Colorado junior
Mitchell Robinson (3-1) was almost equal to the task as he blanked the Lions between the second and seventh innings. In a 1-1 game, Robinson saw the Lions use a single, sac bunt, triple and sac fly to score the go-ahead runs in the eighth. It marked the third tme in the last four games UNK's opponent scored the winning runs in its half of the eighth.
Law picked up another save as he got the final two outs, one via a strikeout. Junior catcher
Billy Hayes (Lemont, Ill.) led the Lopers at the plate by going 2 for 4 with an RBI while junior right fielder
Sean Maruo (Wichita, Kan.) drove Feldmann from the game with a double in the ninth.
Lindenwood's seven-hit attack was paced by cleanup hitter and left fielder Kyle Teter (2 for 3, two RBI's).
The series finale, weather permitting, begins Friday at noon.
