Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods scored seven runs in the sixth inning to rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 7-3, Saturday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.
Due to expected weather in the area, the game was pushed back to 2:00 p.m. With the win, the Ichabods (18-12, 10-9) tie the series at one.
Loper junior lefty
Bradley Brown (Aurora, Colo.) was on cruise control over the first five innings. He shut out WU during the time while surrendering no walks and just four hits.
Already up 1-0, UNK (9-20, 2-14) tallied two in its half of the sixth. The inning featured three walks and back-to-back RBI singles from freshman shortstop
Calvin Rudolph (Millard South H.S.) and senior second baseman
Matt Salamon (3 for 4).
However, the 'Bods had more than a quick response as two singles were sandwiched around a hit batter to begin the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Dylan Lonteen promptly brought home two with a double to left center and then another two-run double came in between two pop ups. UNK couldn't keep it at a one-run deficit as two singles and another two bagger scored three more with two down.
The Lopers loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but lefty reliever Jaren Kutzke got a strikeout to get out of the jam. Over the final two innings, Kearney didn't have a base runner.
Leaving 10 runners stranded, UNK recorded six hits off of four different WU pitchers. Brown (2-3) suffered the loss as he gave up five earned in 5.1 innings. Finally, relievers
Weston Glienke (Spencer, Ia.) and
Clay Collison (Algona, Ia.) combined for 2.1 innings of hitless ball.
Washburn saw Kutzke strike out the side in the seventh with right hander Zach Lindquist fanning two over the final two innings. At the plate, reserve catcher Landon Hay went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI and two-hole hitter Bowe Behymer was 3 for 4 with a run and RBI.
The rubber match has also been moved because of weather and will begin Sunday at two.
