Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas took advantage of a throwing error to beat Nebraska-Kearney in 10 innings, 10-9, Saturday evening in Kansas.
Thanks to a six-run fifth, the Gorillas (17-22, 11-14) erased an 8-3 deficit and went on to sweep the series.
The Lopers (12-26, 5-20) recorded 12 hits and led 7-1 after 2.5 innings. However, they were limited to two runs the rest of the way and committed five errors that led to three Pitt runs.
In the faithful fifth, the Gorillas recorded five of its 11 hits. With two down, pinch hitters Cole Brecheisen and Brock Zanca brought home a combined three runs thanks to back-to-back singles. Leadoff hitter Dallas Reed then hit a two-run homer to left.
Right hand relievers
Peyton Pocock (Kearney H.S.) and
Weston Glienke (Spencer, Ia.) blanked Pitt between the sixth and ninth innings. That allowed the offense to tie the game in the eighth when senior center fielder
Easton Edmond (2 for 4, one run & four RBI's) hit an RB double to right.
In the Loper second, Edmond (Lincoln S.W.) belted a three-run dinger, his seventh of the year, to center. Omaha junior designated hitter
Dallas Schramm (3 for 5, three runs) hit his team-leading eighth homer in the first.
To start the bottom of the 10th, Reed was plunked. Another pinch hitter, Logan Terrell, stepped to the plate and he put down a sac bunt. The played not only moved Reed to second but an errant throw allowed him to come all the way home.
Lefty junior Cooper Gardner (6-1) threw two shutout innings to record his second win of the series. Two other Gorilla relievers combined for two earned runs over 4.2 innings. Overall, four Pitt pitchers combined for 10 K's.
Glienke (3-1) was the tough luck loser, fanning four over two full innings. Besides Edmond and Schramm, freshman first baseman
Ty Roseberry (Kearney H.S.) went 3 for 4 with a run and RBI with junior catcher
Billy Hayes (Lemont, Ill.) going 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI's.
