Gorillas Take Two in Hastings

Senior 2b Molly Stern hit three HR's today
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Juniors Emmie Robertson and Bree Cornett combined for 17 strikeouts to help Pittsburg State beat Nebraska-Kearney, 8-1 and 8-3, Sunday afternoon in Hastings.

Due to rain on Saturday and wet field conditions at Dryden Park, this MIAA double header was pushed back a full day and moved to Smith Softball Complex,

Having recently received votes for the Top 25, the Gorillas (30-10, 9-3) saw Cornett toss a six-hit complete game in the nightcap with Robertson fanning 10 over the first six innings in game one.

A two-time first-team All-MIAA pick, Robertson (19-4) allowed one earned on five hits and no walks. Throwing 78 pitches before giving way to Corbett, she did give up a solo homer to senior second baseman Molly Stern (Peoria, Ariz.) in the sixth.

Pitt got all the offense it needed from freshman leadoff leadoff hitter Katy Kukowski. Finishing 2 for 2 with two runs and five RBI's, the shortstop hit a three-run homer in the second and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Besides Stern's fifth homer of the year, freshman center fielder Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) went 3 for 3 from the cleanup spot.

In the second game, Stern hit solo dingers in the first and seventh innings but it wasn't enough to beat Corbett. The lefty (7-3) fanned seven, walked three and blanked UNK between the third and sixth innings.

Pitt tallied two unearned runs in the top of the first to grab the lead for good. They later scored twice in the third and tallied three more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Eight different Gorillas registered a hit, led by designated player Myka Hayward (2 for 3, two RBI's).

Colorado junior Meg Housholder went the distance again for Kearney, allowing five earned on nine hits and four walks. She also fanned five in throwing 134 pitches.

UNK heads to Washburn and Emporia State next weekend.
