Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Western State Griffons scored 10 unanswered runs to get past Nebraska-Kearney, 18-9, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.
MWSU (25-17, 22-10) swept the series and has now won nine in a row.
On a day with the wind blowing extremely hard from right to left field, UNK (13-29, 6-23) took a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the seventh on the strength of a "Grand Slam" by junior third baseman
Brent Kirsch (Papillion). UNK loaded the based thanks to a leadoff walk, a wind-aided double to left and a single off the third baseman's glove.
The lead was very short lived as the Griffs struck for seven runs in the top of the eighth. With one down and runners at second and third, shortstop and leadoff hitter Dusty Stroup (2 for 3, four runs & four RBI's) hit a double to right center that almost was caught by a diving
Brooks Benson (Parker, Colo.).
After two wild pitches and a walk brought home another run, second baseman David Glaude (4 for 5, three runs & eight RBI's) made it 12-8 thanks to a wind-aided triple to left. Two batters later, third baseman Jeremy Alvarado hit a three-run homer to left.
Glaude reached his RBI total thanks to a three-run homer in the first, a two-run dinger in the second, that RBI triple in the eighth and a two-run single in the ninth.
For UNK, junior designated hitter
Dallas Schramm (2 for 5, one run) hit a three-run shot, his 11th of the year, in the first with junior first baseman
Ricky Trammell (Kansas City) going 2 for 3 with three runs.
The Lopers host Fort Hays State (9-32, 2-26) Wednesday night.
