UNK, Hays Close Out 2017

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Junior Carrie Clarke and freshman Hailey Chapman tossed complete games to help Fort Hays State sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 5-3 and 5-2, Sunday afternoon at a windy Dryden Park.

These were the final games of the 2017 season for both teams.

In game one, Chapman (10-21) threw an eight-hitter that featured three K's and three walks. Throwing just 74 pitches, she blanked UNK (10-46) over the final three innings.

The Lopers had a golden chance to tie the game in the seventh as senior second baseman Molly Stern (Peoria, Ariz.) was plunked to start the inning and freshman catcher Alexis Howe (2 for 4) followed with a single. After a fielder's choice retired Stern at third, Chapman got a strikeout and line out to end the game. The liner was caught by a leaping Veronica Knittig at second base.

Knittig belted a three-run shot in the first to give her team the lead for good. After scoring another run in the fourth, the Tigers saw Knittig have a sac fly in the seventh.

Ralston High graduates and seniors Taylre Keenan and Katy Shupe both had two hits for the Lopers.

Clarke (7-14) scattered 11 hits in the night cap as UNK stranded 12. She didn't walk a batter and fanned four while throwing only 83 pitches.

Offensively, the Tigers (17-39) took advantage of seven walks to score two in the first and two more in the sixth. Four of the batters that reached via a base on balls scored with center fielder Bailey Kennedy and catcher Tess Gray both having two-run singles.

Out hitting FHSU by an 11-7 margin, UNK scored once in the third and once in the seventh but was blanked in the other innings. Junior pitcher Meg Housholder (Parker, Colo.) and freshman center fielder Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) both went 3 for 4 with Howe again ending 2 for 4.

In between games, Kearney honored its four seniors; Keenan, Shupe, Stern and infielder Halle Gydesen (Lexington).
