Lopers Aim to Keep Magic Going

1/24/2018 3:33:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team, winners in six of its last seven games, looks to remain hot when it travels to Lindenwood and Lincoln this weekend.

These are the only games with LWU (9-9, 2-8) and LU (3-15, 0-10) this season. Check the Loper schedule page for tip times and media links.

The Lopers (14-3, 6-3) currently are in sole possession of fifth place in the MIAA standings (after games on Jan. 24). UNK plays six of its final 10 games at home where it is 9-0. So far, Kearney is 3-3 on the road and 2-2 in neutral site games.

Led by graduate transfer Alyssa Frauendorfer (Humphrey) and seniors Michaela Barry (Battle Creek) and McKenzie Brown (G.I. Northwest), UNK has been stellar in a series of close calls. The Lopers are 8-0 in games decided by 10 points or less and 4-0 in overtime games. No team in program history (50 years; modern era) has won four extra session games in a single season.

In seven of its 10 Division II wins, UNK has trailed in the fourth quarter. That includes deficits of 15 points (Pittsburg State), 13 points (Newman) and 10 points (NW Missouri State). The Lopers rallied each time, mainly thanks to 59% shooting from the field over the final 10 minutes. Last Saturday, Kearney sunk 10 of 12 shots (83 percent) to rally from a nine-point hole against Missouri Western State.

UNK has had success against Lindenwood (6-1) and Lincoln (5-1). However, the LWU Lions beat the Lopers, 85-68, in the first round of the 2017 MIAA Tournament. That game was held in the Health & Sports Center and ninth-seeded Lindenwood pulled off another upset before falling by two points in the semifinals.

Individually, Barry is the MIAA Player of the Week for January 22. Now averaging an even 17 points on the season, Barry (29.1) joins Brown (29.4) and Frauendorfer (29.4) as Lopers logging at least 29 minutes a night.

Washburn (Thursday) and Emporia State (Saturday) visit next weekend.
