Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team wrapped its fall season by winning 10 matches at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Regionals this past weekend in Oklahoma City.

The three-day tournament featured "A" and "B" flights for both singles and doubles. The "A" winners advance to the ITA/Oracle National Fall Championships in Arizona this November.

In doubles, senior Sherry Sun (China) and freshman Bhavya Ramineni (India) beat a pair from Augustana, 8-4, before falling to the eventual runners up. Next, sophomore Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) and freshman Vasilisa Polunova (Russia) won their first round match, 8-6, against Upper Iowa. They were eliminated by Central Oklahoma.

Polunova was UNK's most successful singles player, reaching the "A" Round of 16. She took her first round match in straight sets (7-6, 6-0) before edging UCO's Kirtana Bhat (6-4, 3-6, 1-0). Her run ended with a straight set loss to the eventual runner up, Southwest Baptist's Jill Van Den Dungen. Finally, Ramineni and Turarbek had "A" singles wins with sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) winning a match in the singles "B" flight.

In the back draw of the "A" flight, Sun won three matches before falling in the semis.

UNK is now off until February 2019.
