Week Eight Preview: Final Push for the MIAA Tourney

10/18/2018 2:17:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team finished up a four-game road swing with trips to Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern State.

The Lopers (5-9-0, 3-4-0) are currently in sole possession of eighth place in the MIAA standings with nine points (each league win is worth three points; ties are worth one). The top eight teams make the MIAA Tournament with first round games set for Halloween. The top four seeds will host seeds five through eight.

Right behind UNK is Washburn (eight points) and Northeastern State (five points). The Lopers are just a point behind both Missouri Southern and Lindenwood.

The Blue & Gold are 3-4-0 away from home in 2018 and a win this weekend would likely lockup a spot in the MIAA tournament. UNK qualified for the event in 2013 and 2015, losing to Washburn and Central Oklahoma in the first round.

Kearney opens up the weekend with its likely last-ever game with SBU who is moving to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) next year. The Lopers then head over to Joplin to face the Lions on Sunday. Check the Loper schedule page for kickoff times and media links.

UNK is 2-3-1 all-time against both the SBU Bearcats and the MSSU Lions. The Lopers out shot SBU 19-8 last year in Cope Stadium but the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Two days earlier Mo Southern scored two minutes in and that goal helped up until the clock hit zero.

The Lopers, with 11 goals to date, hope to snap a 36-game stretch in which it's scored two or fewer goals. Kearney beat SBU, 3-0, in October 2016; the Loper haven't reached four goals since September 2015 when it blasted Wayne State, 4-1, on the road.

Kearney finishes up the 2018 regular season next weekend with home games against Fort Hays State and Emporia State. The Hays game will be at 2 p.m.; it was listed as "TBA" on all original schedules.
