Late Free Throws Help UNK Beat OBU

Kearney, Neb. – Junior reserve guard Chase Winchester sunk two free throws with 25 seconds left to help Nebraska-Kearney edge Oklahoma Baptist, 80-78, Saturday afternoon in Bethany, Okla.

The game was a part of the GAC/MIAA Central Region Challenge hosted by Southern Nazarene. The Lopers improve to 1-1 while the OBU Bison fall to 0-2.

UNK trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half as OBU shot 62% (16 of 26) from the field. That included a 5 of 12 effort from behind the arc but the Lopers rallied a bit to trail 40-35 at the break.

Shooting 52% (16 of 31) in the second half, Kearney was down 47-37 with 17:22 to play but went on a 27-8 run over a 10 minute span to seemingly take control. A triple from junior forward Kyle Juhl (Harlan, Ia.) capped this stretch but OBU wasn't done.

Never letting the deficit reach double figures, the Bison trailed 64-55 with 1:54 left. They used a 13-4 spurt in just 1:22 to tie things up at 78. UNK had two turnovers in this stretch with OBU hitting three treys and not missing from the field or free throw line.

After a timeout, head coach Kevin Lofton inserted Winchester (DeSoto, Texas) into the lineup for the first time all day. The lefty responded by taking the inbounds pass and going almost coast to coast. He was fouled attempting a layup and then made both freebies.

Oklahoma Baptist had two chances to tie the game but a running shot in the paint by Dishon Lowery hit iron with seven seconds left and then a baseline shot by Antonio Wade didn't fall with a second to go. In between these shots were two missed Loper free throws.

UNK ended the game making exactly half its shots (31 of 62) and with a plus one rebounding margin. The Lopers managed 23 points off of 16 OBU turnovers and overcame 10 made Bison triples.

Individually, freshman Kanon Koster (Kearney H.S.) tallied a game-high 21 points on 7 of 20 shooting. Also making 7 off 9 free throws, he grabbed five defensive boards and had three assists. Next, Juhl had an all-around effort (17 points, six rebounds, six assists & one steal) with senior Carter Burns (Ankeny, Ia.) having another big game off the bench. He went for 14 points, four boards and three assists in 26 minutes of work.

For the Bison, three starters and a reserve were in double digits. That group included Julian Daughtry (team-high 16).

UNK has three games against former RMAC rivals next week, starting Thursday night at Chadron State.
