Wayne Sinks the Lopers with Made Free Throws & Strong Defense

Kearney, Neb. – The Wayne State Wildcats went 28 of 33 at the line and took advantage of 25 turnovers to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 69-52, Saturday night in Wayne.

The 'Cats (2-0) avenge a 59-52 loss to the Lopers (0-2) last year and are now 127-13 at home in the last decade. The game was a part of an MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament. In the early game, Minnesota-Crookston downed Northwest Missouri State, 79-71.

Facing Wayne's patent zone, the young Lopers hung around thanks to five first half threes. Down 28-27 at the break, UNK went cold in the second half, making just 8 of 28 shots (28%).

The eighth and last tie of the game, 35-35, came with 4:08 left in the third. Wayne closed the quarter on a 13-6 run that featured two threes. UNK was down just nine midway through the fourth but the 'Cats made a series of free throws to not only salt thigs away but also built its lead to the biggest of the night.

Three starters reached double digits including sophomore guard Halley Busse (17) and senior guard Maggie Lowe (11). Wayne, shooting only 36% (18 of 49) from the field, tallied 16 points off those 25 Loper miscues. Both Lowe and Busse had four steals apiece.

A balanced Kearney attack saw nine players between three and nine points. That included Iowa freshman forwards Shiloh McCool (seven rebounds, five points & four assists) and Maegan Holt (nine points & five rebounds).

UNK is slated to host Central Christian (Kan.) College Wednesday night.
