Season Begins with Win over the Flames

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney Aqualopers won six events to swim past the College of Saint Mary Flames, 103-74, Saturday afternoon at the Kearney High School pool.

This was UNK's first regular season event in 2018-19.

The Lopers won five individual events and the 400 freestyle relay on the day. Freshman Claire Nash (Overland Park, Kan.) led the way as she placed first in the 50 free (25.64), swam lead for the 400 squad (3:54.31) and was anchor for the second place 400 medley foursome (4:22.22).

Next, freshman Emily Wheeler (Omaha Burke) took the gold in the 1,000 free (12:27.22) with Arizona sophomore Gabby Buttermore winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:15.30.

Among other Aqualoper veterans, Colorado junior Caroline Stieglitz swam anchored the 400 free team, Minnesota junior Alyssa Hoffman won the 100 free (1:04.22) and Lincoln junior Mikara Feit won the 100 backstroke (1:04.22). Finally, Stieglitz was runner up in both the 200 individual medley (2:28.87) and 100 back (1:09.07).

Kearney makes its annual trek to Sioux City, Ia., for two events at Morningside College.
