Bats Quiet in Losses to Hillcats and Peacocks

Kearney, Neb. – Rogers (Okla.) State senior Alex Brake and Upper Iowa junior Jaclyn Thompson both tossed complete game one-hitters to help their teams beat Nebraska-Kearney, 11-0 (5 innings) and 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Hays, Kan.

This was day two of the Fort Hays State Crossover Tournament. The Lopers (2-6) will face Wayne State (1-2) and nationally-ranked Harding, Ark. (5-1) on Sunday.

In the afternoon tilt against the UIU Peacocks (5-1), Thompson struck out eight and walked three over seven full innings. Improving to 2-0, she didn't hit a Loper with sophomore Sara Sempek (Papillion) breaking up the no-hit bid with a one out single to right in the seventh.

At the plate, Upper Iowa scored runs in three different innings including a four spot in the third. Finishing with nine hits and taking advantage of two walks and two errors, the Peacocks were led by cleanup hitter Katie Crogan (3 for 3, two runs and three RBI's) and five hole hitter Julia Buffington (2 for 3, one run and three RBi's). Buffington hit a two-run homer in the third with Crogan having three singles.

In the first game, Brake (3-1) had six K's and no walks in facing just 16 batters. Freshman catcher Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) broke up the no-hitter with a two out single to left in the bottom of the fourth.

The Hillcats (10-4), from the Heartland Conference, scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to bust open a tight game. Six different players had at least two hits including first baseman Taylor Santistevan (2 for 4, three RBI's) and designated player Allie McFetridge (2 for 3, two runs and two RBI's).
