Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore lefty Dalton Morrow struck out nine over eight innings, sophomore righty Drew Wagner picked up a save and senior center fielder Clint Jack drove in three runs to help Southwest Baptist hold off Nebraska-Kearney,
6-5, Monday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.
In a series pushed back a full day due to weather, the Bearcats (6-8) avoided a Loper (5-8) sweep by getting out to a 6-1 lead. Morrow shut out UNK between the fourth and eighth innings with Jack (3 for 5) having three singles batting cleanup.
The Kearney ninth started with a single and double to drive Morrow (3-0) from the game. Junior center fielder
Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.) then greeted freshman reliever Logan Sorrell with an RBI single to center. While Sorrell got the next Loper to foul out, preseason All-American
Dallas Schramm (Millard North) took him deep to make it a one-run deficit.
The Loper hits kept coming as another single and double put the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position. However, Wagner came in and recorded a strikeout and pop up to center to earn his first save of the year.
Schramm led UNK at the plate by going 3 for 5 with a run and four RBI's while redshirt freshman shortstop
Peter Carlson (Elkhorn South) was 2 for 3 and a run scored from the nine hole. Six others had at least one hit. On the mound, five Lopers made an appearance with Australian senior
Andrew Riddell and California junior
Josh Cooper combining for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Overall, this five some combined for nine K's.
Besides Jack, SBU's top two hitters -- junior Tyler Mathys and sophomore Andrew Meier -- were a combined 5 for 9 with five runs and an RBI. Overall, the teams combined for 23 runners left on base (12 for the Lopers and 11 for the 'Cats).
An unprecedented 13-game home stand starts this weekend when Central Oklahoma comes to Memorial Field for three games. Others to visit in March will be Minot (N.D.) State, Missouri Southern State, Northwest Missouri State and Lindenwood.
